Gleanings of Wheat

This post describes how various operating systems would work if they were airlines. Great post. Windows NT Air Just like Windows Air, but costs more, uses much bigger planes, and takes out all the other aircraft within a 40-mile radius when it explodes. Windows XP Air You turn up at the airport,which is under contract to only allow XP Air planes. All the aircraft are identical, brightly coloured and three times as big as they need to be. The signs are huge and all point the same way. Whichever way you go, someone pops up dressed in a cloak and pointed hat insisting you follow him. Your luggage and clothes are taken off you and replaced with an XP Air suit and suitcase identical to everyone around you as this is included in the exorbitant ticket cost. The aircraft will not take off until you have signed a contract. The inflight entertainment promised turns out to be the same Mickey Mouse cartoon repeated over and over again. I recently migrated from Windows to an exclusively Ubuntu operating system, and the only software/ capability that I missed from Windows was E-Sword - great program, by the way. After doing some reading I found a way to install E-Sword on Linux, but so far it isn't working properly. It installed, starts up, but there is absolutely no content when it does. Weird. Anyway, I've been pretty spoiled by E-Sword so I was a little weary of trying a new program out but I wanted to get something working so I installed BibleTime . First impressions? I love that they have all the dictionaries, various translations, books, devotionals, ect built into the installer. LOVE it. I just had to click on various items in a list and they installed for me. So far the program's layout seems less customizable than E-Sword, but that is ok because the default layout is a mirror image of how I had E-Sword set up. BibleTime comes with Strongs numbers, but unlike E-Sword the numbers aren't thrown ...

I've hit my first problem...Bible software. When I was on the mess that we call Windows I had E-sword , and I used it a lot. I had tons of commentaries, dictionaries, and devotionals installed. It was my favorite program. Well, now that I'm not on Windows any more I'm going to have to get creative and find new software. I'll be downloading and installing JSword , I'll let you know how it goes. If you know of any other programs that will run on Ubuntu 7.10 please email me or leave a comment!

I have always been a Windows user. The first computer I got on the internet with 10 years ago was running Windows 95, eventually I got XP (new computer) and have even upgraded to Vista (another new computer) about 6 months ago (and then down graded b/c Vista drove me bonkers). Well, I've had lots of problems with Microsoft in general and have been toying with the idea forsaking my high cost software background for an open source solution. I've been using OpenOffice for about a year as an alternative to Microsoft Office, and have been VERY pleased with it. The same goes for The Gimp , an Photoshop alternative - and yes, I know Adobe makes Photoshop. Last night I backed up my files and installed Ubuntu 7.10 . It has been less than 24 hours, but I'm very happy. Obviously things are going to be different from Windows, but overall I haven't had any difficulty configuring my programs.
