A Victim Treats His Mugger Right

Now this is interesting! This guy gets mugged, gives the kid his jacket and takes him out to dinner. Seriously, I'm impressed. Julio Diaz has a daily routine. Every night, the 31-year-old social worker ends his hour-long subway commute to the Bronx one stop early, just so he can eat at his favorite diner. But one night last month, as Diaz stepped off the No. 6 train and onto a nearly empty platform, his evening took an unexpected turn. He was walking toward the stairs when a teenage boy approached and pulled out a knife. "He wants my money, so I just gave him my wallet and told him, 'Here you go,'" Diaz says. As the teen began to walk away, Diaz told him, "Hey, wait a minute. You forgot something. If you're going to be robbing people for the rest of the night, you might as well take my coat to keep you warm." The would-be robber looked at his would-be victim, "like what's going on here?" Diaz says. "He asked me, 'Why are you ...

Christ Our Mediator Chapter 1 Questions

As I mentioned before , my church recently started reading this book and the Pastor emails us all questions to help us think more about it. I thought it might help me reflect a little more deeply and hopefully give you something to mull over as well if I share it. If you have thoughts in response to these questions I'd love to hear read them in the comments. Oh, and happy Resurrection Day! Why are images of the cross in and of themselves insufficient? Why are the reasons behind the cross so significant? ** I remember when The Passion of Christ hit theaters, how people talked about how this could be used as a great witnessing tool, how vivid the images were, how distressing it was to see Jesus suffer like that, etc. I remember, after seeing it, even thinking some of those things. But honestly? It didn't have any lasting impact on me, or on those around me who also saw it. It conjured up feelings of pity for Jesus, that the Pharisees would be so vicious, that the Romans would...

I'm reading this right now

At church we just started reading Christ our Mediator by C.J. Mahaney, actually the church reads it for part of the mid week service discussion and because I work Wednesdays I'm reading it on my own. I'm only in chapter three right now, but it is a pretty short book so I expect I'll be done with it in the next few days. I've been blessed by it so far, and each week my Pastor emails the entire congregation a list of questions to go a long with the text as well as a Bible verse to reflect upon. These questions help make you think a little more thoroughly about what you've just read and I've found it incredibly helpful. At any rate, I may start posting the questions and my answers.

Lemon Grilled Orange Roughy

I altered the recipe I found here a bit. 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon butter, melted 1/4 teaspoon fresh coarse ground black pepper 4 orange roughy fillets(each fillet should weight 4 ounces each) In a small mixing bowl, stir the first 4 ingredients until well blended; divide mixture in half. Brush fillets with half the lemon juice mixture. Grill 5 inches from heat for 5 minutes or until fish flakes easily. Drizzle with the remaining half of lemon juice mixture. If desired, sprinkle with additional pepper and some salt; serve with lemon wedges.

Leviticus 19-20 Reflections

Its been a while since I've done one of these posts, but every time I've started a post in the past couple weeks I just haven't been able to find the right words and so I leave them in drafts. But today I've just got a very brief post in store for you. In the 19th and 20th chapter of Leviticus God is giving Moses laws covering quite a few different topics - social and sexual order, consulting spirits, and worshiping other gods - and ends this section with a reiteration of the reason He is giving the Law. Eighteen times in these two chapters we find phrases such as " I am the LORD your God " and " I am the LORD ;" it seems that God wants absolutely no misunderstanding about this. The Law was given by the God that delivered the Israelites out of Egypt. The phrase is inserted over and over and over, seemingly to draw the recipient's mind back to Him. It would be easy for the listeners to hear Moses give these commandments and them scoffingly say ...

Semi-Home made Mexican Pizza

Here's a quick and easy treat, just grab some frozen pizza dough and cheese from the grocery store. Roll out the pizza dough. Top with your favorite home made (or store bought) salsa, Mexican mix cheese, and your favorite toppings. I used baby shrimp and crab meat. Cook as directed, serve with sour cream on the side.

Grilled basa w/ veggies

Image
I picked up some basa at the grocery a couple days ago - figured we'd try something new. Next, I hunted down this simple recipe. This fish is like the chicken of fish. It could taste like anything with the right seasoning, it doesn't have that distinct "fishy" taste as some other breeds thus making it perfect for people (like my children and mother) who don't normally like fish. 4 basa steaks olive oil black pepper lemon juice 4 oz (100g) butter handful chopped parsley Take the butter and mix into it the chopped parsley, a dash of lemon and some pepper. Roll into a sausage shape and leave it in the fridge whilst you cook your fish. Heat the grill, line and grease your grill pan. Place the basa fish steaks about 4" (10cm) from the heat and grill for about 5 minutes either side - brushing with oil to prevent them drying out. Serve immediately with a portion of the parsley and lemon butter on top. **Notes** I also threw a sliced (length wise) cucumber and a sli...

I'm a big fat worrier but He is faithful

I'm a worrier, I always have been but I also have become convinced over the past couple of years that my excessive worry/ fear is sin. Can I help when these fears pop up? I don't think so (I could be wrong and am open to correction on this), but I certainly can do something about dwelling in them like I tend to do. I think such action betrays a heart divided, a heart that does not truly treasure Christ as it should. If God is supreme and loves us, if we are truly in Christ then our distrust and worry do not reflect His glory. I used to think I could not help my continued worrying, I thought that it is part of my personality and perhaps (on some level) that I would never be free from it. But the more I study Scripture, the more I draw near to Him, the more I understand Isaiah 26:3. An situation may, and often does, arise that would ordinarily cause me to tremble but if I will seek God as my all surpassing treasure I can flee from the shackles of my concern and rest in the ar...
